Mixotrophic growth regime of novel strain Scenedesmus sp. DDVG I in municipal wastewater for concomitant bioremediation and valorization of biomass

Availability of cost-effective nutrients for the commercial cultivation microalgae is one major challenges. The present study investigated feasibility primary municipal wastewater (PMWW) collected from a local treatment plant in Minnesota, USA as an alternative to fresh-water growth media towards high-value bioenergy feedstock production. novel strain Scenedesmus sp. DDVG I was cultivated PMWW under heterotrophic and mixotrophic modes 250 mL Erlenmeyer flasks. optimized mode further scaled up 3-L bubbled bioreactor. confirmed potential medium while showed superior biomass productivity (0.069 g/L d), lipid yield (22.5%), FAME content (22.04% dry cell weight) over 10 days mode. also high essential amino acid (159.8 mg/g DCW). corresponding values bioremediation efficiencies chemical oxygen demand (COD) total nitrogen (TN) by were 75.6% 99.8% respectively. Meanwhile, ammonia (NH3–N) phosphorus (TP) removed at 100% removal efficiencies. Analyses fatty profile different parameters that required biodiesel characterization revealed high-quality nature Scenedesmus-derived oil. Overall, concluded effective with recovery valuable resources biomass.
